Apple is working on lots of new M5 and M6 Mac configurations and we now have exclusive details about exactly what the company is working on. In 2025, all of the new Macs you could buy new include Apple’s cutting-edge M4 chip, with the MacBook Air and Mac Studio receiving that latest processing hardware in March 2025. But Apple is already working on the two devices’ replacements – and even the nearly forgotten Mac Pro will receive a significant hardware upgrade. We’ve also revealed 15 new Macs that are in the pipeline, according to our own data and what insiders told us. As those people and basic logic tell us is likely, it seems Apple is preparing to show off the M5 in just a few months’ time, and M6-propped devices could actually get some exciting updates late next year. There is a pattern to Apple product identifiers, though, so it wasn’t too hard to deduce which identifier is for which forthcoming Mac. Apple is planning on launching the Macs listed below between now and next year, though release dates mentioned here are rumors and tentative based on Apple’s typical timeline for new products.
family M5 expected to launch in late 2024-26
Apple usually refreshes the MacBook Pro in the fall of every year, and it sounds like 2025 might not be an exception. MacBook ProBD_Employees.pngIn late 2024, saw the MacBook Pro in M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max configurations. The Mac Mini was left with both an M4 and an M4 Pro, and the cheap M4 Isobel turned up inside the iMac.
Apple’s 2025 drops might operate using a similar model, according to what we were told. Apple is testing a Mac with the identifier J873s, according to people who are familiar with the matter.
Given that the current M4 Pro Mac mini is the J773s, the J873s could be an M5 Pro Mac mini. While we saw no sign of a base M5 Mac mini, it wouldn’t be the first Apple hardware update to offer only a high-performance variant like, say, only offering an M5 Pro version of the Mac mini.
In addition, there is an unreleased Mac, identified as J833, kodnamed “dart,” which could be M5-equipped iMac. The development work for the 24-inch 2023 iMac is referred to as the J433 inside Apple, so an M5 iMac is at least feasible, even if it is no guarantee. In addition to its base M5 Macs, Apple is said to be launching the MacBook Pro with M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max, all of which match with the leaked identifiers. Appel is anticipated to keep the same design for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro in the fall 2025 release, so in reality it is more of a spec bump. There had been rumors that would be the case and they seem to be the case from what we found. We were advised Apple is preparing four different hardware variants: J714c — MacBook Pro 14-inch with M5 Max J714s — MacBook Pro 14-inch with M5 Pro J716c — MacBook Pro 16-inch with M5 Max J716s — MacBook Pro 16-inch with M5 Pro The device identifiers are the same as existing M4 MacBook Pro models, each codenamed J6194, J6193, J6198, and J6199, respectively, suggesting no major design or chassis overhauls. In processing power though, we could be in for some significant upgrades. One report claims the M5 Pro and M5 Max “use 2.5D packaging” that has “independent CPU and GPU design” which will “enhance production yields and thermal performance.” TSMC’s new chip packaging process is referred to by the company as “System-in-Integrated-Chips-Molding-Horizontal (SoIC-mH), which is a 3D stacking process which assembles the different chips into a single package, so this may be the first of Apple’s chips to use these changes. The M5 MacBook Pros are anticipated to land at about the same time as the M5 iPad Pro and M5 Apple Vision Pro, according to two earlier reports.
The desktop Macs are getting some love as well
We were also informed that a new Mac Pro is in development and that its codename is J704. Previous rumors point to this device launching ahead of the end of the year in 2025. As a point of comparison, the Mac Pro hasn’t been meaningfully updated since 2023.

The MacBook Air could get the M5 in early 2026
Following the launch of the completely redesigned MacBook Pro in late 2025, Apple will probably launch two MacBook Air models in early 2026. Similar to the MacBook Pro refreshes, it was claimed the new MacBook Air models will still feature an identical chassis design as their predecessors.
The new MacBook Airs will reportedly carry two device IDs – J813 and J815, AppleInsider was informed. That indicates we’ll get the same sizes that we’ve already got 13-inch and 15-inch as the current M4 MacBook Airs are also known as J713 and J715.
The M4 MacBook Air was granted a Center Stage-ready camera, a transfer from the M4 MacBook Pro. The M5 MacBook Air could see equally minor changes, but will otherwise be something of a spec bump.
